The Magnolia Table was originally the Elite Cafe in Waco, Texas, built in 1915, and served as a popular gathering spot for the city’s residents for many years. When the 1953 tornado hit the town, the diner closed down. That is until 2016, Chip and Joanna Gaines made it their mission to restore the cafe to its original grandeur with their expertise in commercial construction projects. The Gaineses reopened the Magnolia Table in 2018, welcoming both old and new diners to its signature modern farmhouse aesthetic.
While they added a few of their own personal touches during the commercial renovation, they kept the original structure intact as homage to the cafe’s 100-year history and kept the memories alive through the interiors. They have successfully created a new contemporary space that suits the changing needs and times whilst keeping the feel familiar by weaving heritage throughout.
Fondaco dei Tedeschi, Venice
The Il Fondaco dei Tedeschi is an ancient Venetian warehouse that went through a commercial renovation last 2013 to become the new department store for tourists visiting this historic destination. It was first built in 1228, and has served as a trading post for German merchants, a customs house under Napoleon, and a post office under Mussolini.
Because of its status as a legal monument, the interventions had to be minimal. Most of the elements and the layout of spaces has been retained while including additions of a large wooden terrace and few entrances. The commercial remodeling incorporates wooden panels, glass mirrors and golden metallic work that accentuates the rusty terracotta interiors of the complex.
Dutch architecture firm, OMA, successfully transformed this historical venue into “a contemporary urban department store staging a diverse range of activities, from shopping to cultural events, social gatherings and everyday life.” The Fondaco reopened to the public in 2016, and is now the first DFS store in Europe with over 700 boutiques offering customers unique luxury shopping and lifestyle experiences.

When Absolute Cosmetic Clinic set out to create its new flagship store in Perth CBD, it had one goal in mind: to create a high-end, luxury boutique that would be the go-to destination for celebrity clients.
